The smart meter program is an initiative of the Victorian Government.

As an electricity distribution business responsible for the network operation in the inner suburbs, CitiPower’s role in the program is to deploy a smart metering network, install smart meters and operate them.

Smart meters offer a number of important benefits over old manually-read meters. One of them is that they accurately measure energy consumption by the half hour in near real time. Customers will eventually be able to access their energy consumption data using devices such as an In Home Display or web based services, better understand their use and costs.

In December 2011, following a comprehensive review of the program, the Government announced that the smart meter program would continue and that all homes and businesses in Victoria would be required to have their old meter replaced with the new digital smart meter by the end of 2013.
